Requirements to Access Tableau for Research Strategic Dashboards
1. You must have a valid AccessNet account to login to Tableau.
2. First time Tableau users must be provisioned for Tableau Access. For data downloads, you will also need a Tableau Explorer License. Users that already have the elevated roles listed below, the Tableau and Explorer license has already been provisioned for you.
3. If you do not have Access via the elevated roles listed below, your Division or Department’s Asst Director of Research (ADR) or Dean must approve your access with an email request to [click-for-email].

On a Mac? Set the following option: Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Show Scroll Bars > Always
Data Sources:
- Proposal and Award data originates from ERA.
- Expenditure data originates from Banner.
- Proposals are categorized by the primary associated department and contact PI on the record in ERA. Co-PIs are not included.
- Dollar amounts and counts only include new submissions and supplements.
- Non-Competing Continuations and No Cost Extensions are NOT included.
- The dashboard is updated monthly after the data is validated and finalized.
- Available data goes back five years from the current fiscal year.
Summary Tab:
- If you apply data filters on the Fiscal Year in the Summary page, they will not propagate to the Proposal, Award, and Expenditures tabs. You will need to re-select the filters on those tabs.
Proposals Tab:
- Proposal amounts and counts are only for new submissions and supplements.
- Submissions are reported on the months based on the ‘Submitted’ date field on the Proposal Tracking summary page.
- Caveats:
- Sometimes a submitted date entered is historic and not from the current reporting month. In that case, the proposal submission month will be the month when the submitted date was entered in ERA and not the actual submitted date month.
- If the status of the proposal was updated to ‘Pending’ in a month later than the month of the submitted date, the proposal submission month will be the month of the status change.
Awards Tab:
- Proposals are categorized by the primary associated department and contact PI on the record in ERA at the time of reporting.
- Dollar amounts are only for new awards and supplements.
- Awards are reported on the months when they were added to ERA and not the actual Notice of Award (NOA) award month. The date field that determines the reporting month is on the Awarded Increment page and is called the ‘Processed Date’. In most cases the month should be the same.
- Caveats:
- Sometimes an award increment is entered in ERA a few months after the actual Notice of Award date.
- If the status of the proposal was not updated to a Funded-related status, then the award will not be reported in that month.
Funding Sources - Awards Tab:
- Funding sources are determined by the Prime sponsor types as categorized in ERA.
- Federal Pass-Through category = Prime sponsor is NOT Federal, but the Originating sponsor type is Federal. As an example:
- If Temple is a sub awardee with Harvard as the prime sponsor and NSF as the originating sponsor, the award is recorded as a Federal Pass Through.
Expenditures Tab:
- Expenditures are categorized by the FOAPAL in Banner.
